Attaining Charitable Status

About

We support sports clubs to become Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) ensuring the right governance structures are in place from day one. Our support helps clubs meet charity regulation requirements, protect trustees and members and unlock Gift Aid and tax relief.

Clubs we work with on incorporation typically generate around 25% extra revenue through access to funding streams and Gift Aid opportunities.  Use our calculator at the bottom of the page to find out how much we could help you generate.

Supporting Clubs UK-Wide

We’ve helped over 50 sports clubs across the UK successfully incorporate as a range of legal entities, including charities, Community Benefit Societies, Community Interest Companies, and more. Each journey is unique, but the goal is always the same: helping clubs strengthen their governance, unlock new funding opportunities, and build long-term sustainability.

What we do

We deliver a comprehensive range of services to help sports clubs achieve charitable status. By focusing on strong governance and appropriate legal structures, we support clubs to meet regulatory requirements and operate to the highest standards of compliance.

We tailor our support to each club’s context, ensuring structures are practical, proportionate, and capable of supporting long-term sustainability and impact.

Initial Consultation

We begin by helping your committee decide whether a SCIO (in Scotland) or a CIO (in England & Wales) is best for your club. We’ll explain the advantages and limitations of charitable status, what it means for trustees, and the potential fundraising benefits.

Drafting Constitutions

We prepare a tailored constitution for your club, drawing on templates that are pre-approved by OSCR or the Charity Commission. These documents cover governance, charitable purposes, and how the club will operate, ensuring your application has the best chance of success.

Regulator Application

We take the stress out of the process by liaising directly with OSCR (Scotland) or the Charity Commission (England & Wales). We prepare and submit all documentation, respond to regulator queries, and keep your committee updated until approval is secured.

Asset Transfer Support

We guide you through the transfer of assets, contracts, and obligations into the new charitable entity. This ensures your club continues to operate smoothly, while locking assets into a structure that guarantees they will always be used for charitable purposes.
